A Letter from a family of a victim of The Judicio-Industrial Complex as it stands in Whatcom County, Washington State of The USA - to the members of The Jail Stakeholder's group ---- As Whatcom County Sheriff, Prosecutor, and County Council push relentlessly to foist a multizillion dollar prison to be built on unsuspecting Ferndalians -
"To all of you involved in this shameful travesty,
It is evident that you are planning on pushing the jail forward again. I guess no does not mean no to you the way it does to the rest of us. I understand that there will be another stakeholders meeting on Friday. I wonder if any of the real stakeholders will be present. Legacy, Alliance One, Aramark, Bail Bondsmen, Lawyers, Police and Guard Unions just to name a few. These are all people that get paid out of the current system but at what cost to the citizens?
Money has been allocated to the care and maintenance of your current facility but it is left to go to ruin while money is spent on prosecuting the poor and the mentally ill. It is a dereliction of duty to not care for the facilities that the citizens entrust to you. It is apprehensible that you drag this on and on hoping that the taxpayers will feel sorry for you and write you a check on our children’s future for $120M plus. When has anything government even come close to being on budget. NEVER! So let’s call it $200M.
Where is your needs assessment? Did anyone even write a business plan for this? How can anyone with a conscience even think of doing what you are doing without a real plan? Business 101 teaches students how to write an effective business plan. Where is yours? Did anyone ask a student a Western to write one? It is evident that you expect to fill this jail and of course you will. If you build it, you will keep it full or risk criticism for over building. You will go down in history as one of the last groups of people who continued this draconian method of punishment. Don’t think that any of us are fooled by your statements of having some mental health beds. That is not where all of your hearts are. Some of you just want that mega jail.
Had our son not gone through the experience of dealing with your judicial system, my family and associates would have never been involved in protesting. Now that I am involved, I continue to hear similar stories to his. Arrested for a minor offence, jailed indefinitely because of cash bail constraints, denied medications, service charges for phone, commissary, public defenders. Charges are then stacked so they are forced into a plea deal just to get out. Then along comes Alliance One to mine them of any future hope they could have to earn a living and survive. For our son, suicide was the only way out.
As an employer, I continue to advertise for employees with Whatcom County Felonies because these felonies mean so little. They are not real felonies. These people come in with so many scars from what you have done to them that it is shameful. I do my best to mend the damage and give them hope for a future. The services that I try to provide are what you should be doing on the front end so that these people are not at risk of offending in the first place. The fact that private citizens are taking up the slack and providing the services that you should be providing is truly shameful due to the fact that you are not listening to your constituents and just keep trying to build a bigger jail. You would rather spend huge sums of money on the back end instead of investing in programs on the front end so these people never end up in jail.
If you move forward on this you are going to have a brutal awakening. We have had time to prepare this time and you will soon see a national spotlight on your activities that you never expected. Our business and internet connections are worldwide. We will be advertising our plight to a worldwide audience on several of our web sites. We are prepared to spend whatever it takes to inform the general public of what is really going on here. Other business leaders have already signed on and will be spreading the word.
From our initial campaigns, we expect the fundraising to be phenomenal because we have a business plan. We understand that it will take big money to defeat big money. The choice is yours. Be true leaders and help the citizens that you are entrusted to help or carry on with the private profiteering model and the victimization of your citizens.
