We are capable of designing sculptural architectural installations for an interior - such as a house, or building foyer,etc-
as well as outbuildings for one's properties - and of course, houses and a myriad of buildings as well-
Atlas Architecture Manifest :
Despite all the efforts of proponents of an organic architecture, that is an architecture that is truly representative of the human experience, and true to the Values of the American People-
Architecture has all but been consumed by a deification of the Steel and Glass box...
Wright foresaw the dangers of "The International Style" - 'tis why he fought so fiercely, and even ruthlessly for his vision of organic architecture- not necessary because he disliked what is most arguably the genius Walter Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier- (who were all friends of his, and who he respected privately while he lambasted publicly)-
but because he feared how easily their program could be twisted and disfigured -and forced into the service of the American Plutocracy-
He was Right.
The Work of Architecture Phillip Johnson, who no doubt had great talent and we are most appreciative of his sublime estate, with its glass house in connecticut, most likely secured the final link the chain, with his Seagram Building, which wholly subjugated architecture to Big Business and The Superior Rich - the 1%
I think that the work of Mies, Gropius, and Le Corbusier were good and true to their heartfelt-brainwon ideals for the most part, but I question Johnson, and his motivations.-
Contemporary Architecture has become so inhuman - so detached from the values of the common man - it is wholly subjugated- ass end -to corporate interests and the precedence of the machine- the mechanical brain.
Unlike contemporary architects, and the businessmen who enforce the inhuman program- the organic architects sought to take advantage of the machine as a tool - but not to offer their wrists and ankles to be chained to unchecked mediocrity, hollow flimsy boxes, and urban sprawl.
This is why, as our brothers and sisters take to the streets in occupation, we creatives - we architects, sculptors, artists, crafts-persons, engineers and inventors - seek to reclaim architecture - We seek to Occupy the world of Design - not in subjugation to special interests - but in the effort to pursue a New Economy - propelled by the New Design - or at least one that truly serves the greatest good for the greatest number - in the pursuit of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for all sentience-
The Mother of all thae Arts and Sciences, The Gesamkunstwerk - must be put back in service of human ideals and the common man- the People.
If our hypothesis is correct, that architecture and design has great power - through its structure, and its nature - to better the lives of Worldkind - then this truly is our aim-
We seek not perfection. We are knowing of the human fallacy - our great failings - we merely seek an improvement - however small, to the human condition - in our family, our communities, our cities, regions, countries, and our world as a whole-
The New Architecture - The New Design - In Service of The New Economy - and the greatest good for the greatest number - must be formed organically - through collaboration, and most especially experimentation-
If the fruits of our efforts are to be anything at all - then they will reveal what media and mode are successful in our goals - and where we have failed - in the hopes that others will take over where we have left off-
In these dire times, of economic, social, and environmental peril - we must take back the world of design, if we are to find a sustainable way of life for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren- We must be the change we want to See in our communities- We must design the change we want to see for our region, we must create the change we want to see for our world !
We will strive to grow and change, and adapt organically - as the tree, which sprouts from a seed, builds a strung trunk, sends out deep roots, before it even begins to leaf - each part of the tree is depended upon the previous - interrelated- symbiotic - interdigitated- a tree stands tall and long by bending to the wind - but holding its ground - by searching and reaching, and adapting to the challenges of its environment-
The tree grows solid, strong, and flexible - whether it is in a lush forest, or on a dry harsh arid outcropping of volcanic glass - its overall form changes - this is the program of the tree - from which it will not turn, be dissuaded, or tarry- it is still the same species whether it grows on a foundation of sand or of stone or of soil-
We can learn much from the Tree. We can Learn much from Nature. It is through the observation of nature, our greatest teacher - that we find the inspiration- it is here we find the modes and models of sustainability- in all its myriad of hues and forms!
Nature will Save us, despite all we have done to all but destroy her.
Through our instruments, through our vehicles - that is Atlas Design Company and Roxbury Live/Work Community - we will ever strive for these goals -
How fortunate we are! In that this time,on this day, that we have such an extraordinary opportunity to join hands with our sisters - take shovels with our brothers - and put our mutual efforts toward the great work - like the waves that work upon the stones of the shore - and through the erosion of these solid walls of indifference - carve the most extraordinary of forms-
